Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

The course aims at providing the tools to understand the causes and consequences of migration flows, for both the countries of origin and the countries of destination. In particular, we analyze the effects of migration on the labor market, the role of cultural assimilation and the consequences for development.

The course objective is to provide students with an adequate knowledge of migration flows within an economic and social context.
The course aims at providing appropriate skills to critically understand economic causes and consequences of the migration phenomena.
At the end of the course, students should be able to evaluate the cost and benefits of migration flows for both sending and receiving countries.
Finally, the exam should provide to students adequate communication skills to convey ideas on migration phenomena.

Prerequisiti

No specific prerequisites are required. Logical skills and elementary knowledge of mathematics and statistics acquired in secondary school are sufficient. A background in economics is an advantage for the course’s comprehension.

Metodi didattici

Face-to-face lectures, exercises, group assignments

Verifica Apprendimento

Frequentanti: 20% class participation (including midterm presentations). 40% group project. 40% final written individual exam (2 open question).
Non Frequentanti: 100% written exam (4 open questions + 10 multiple choice questions).

• History of migrations
• The decision to migrate and motivations (work, family reunification, refugee, etc.)
• Climate change induced migration
• Types of migrants (countries of origin and educational level) and countries of destination chosen.
Effect of migration on countries of origin
• brain drain or brain gain?
• Remittances
Effect of migration (and types of migration) on destination countries
• Wages and employment
• Social welfare (how migrants contribute to public spending)
• Economics of households
• Crime
• Cultural assimilation, segregation, second generations of migrants.
Italian, European and international policies on the management of migratory flows (types of VISA and points system).
Public intervention in migration management (SPAR, cooperatives, reception).
