This course aims at developing knowledge and understanding in several key areas of Applied English including: a) Advanced comprehension of scientific texts. b) Advanced listening comprehension of scientific audio and video material.
Furthermore, the course aims to cultivate the ability to apply this knowledge and understanding effectively by: a) refining listening and comprehension abilities of scientific material presented orally and in writing. b) enhancing proficiency in English note taking and writing. c) improving oral communication and presentation skills of scientific material in English.
Prerequisiti
An English language knowledge certificate is not mandatory, but highly recommended.
The recommended level of English should be comparable to that of a B2 level (in oral and written forms) according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages – CEFR.
Metodi didattici
The course is entirely online and asynchronous, so students can complete each section any time they like.
The course consists of four modules. The first three consist of two lessons each, for a total individual study time of 2 hours per lesson, thus amounting to approximately 4 hours of study time for each of the first three modules.
Within the lectures there are learning activities designed to monitor learning and allow progress in the course.
The fourth module consists of an individual project, in which students will be required to record themselves presenting a power point or Canva presentation on an assigned scientific topic for 6 minutes, submitting their recording for revision. This should require approximately 6 hours of work.
Verifica Apprendimento
To pass, you will need to complete all the required assignments. These can be quizzes or written assignments.
You will also be required to prepare and upload a 6-minute power point presentation recording in which you present a scientific paper. The recording will be evaluated with qualitative feedback for improvements and a pass/fail mark.

Contenuti
The course is organized in 4 modules.
Module 1 emphasizes listening skills. Students will listen to videos covering topics in psychology and neuroscience and will be required to answer questions on the material covered.
Module 2 will focus on writing. Students will learn general writing skills necessary for academic writing at the graduate level.
Module 3 will focus reading and writing abilities. Students will learn to efficiently read and synthesise scientific content.
Module 4 emphasises speaking and communication skills. Students will prepare a video recording of themselves presenting a scientific topic.
