Obiettivi Formativi
The aim of this Biocomputing Laboratory is to accompany medical students in a path starting from the description of selected paradigms of pathology (with symptoms and molecular basis of disease) to examples of protein investigation and design of molecular intervention for either detection, diagnostics, prevention or therapy. Students will be provided with access and usage of computational biology tools (including AI agents) for protein investigation and design within the realm of Molecular Medicine. At the end of the laboratory, students should have acquired the overall knowledge on how to investigate the molecular basis of disease and received several intellectual stimuli on how to design tailor made interventions.
Prerequisiti
This Biocomputing Laboratory constitutes a relevant portion of the Innovative Teaching Project “Surfing the Molecular Basis of Disease with Biocomputing”. The Laboratory is an Elective activity chosen by interested students, hence the intellectual drive necessary to be exposed to and appreciate in silico protein structure analysis, molecular biology tools and biotechnological strategies applied to the realm of Molecular Medicine is expected from the students.
Metodi didattici
Usage and familiarization with free Biocomputing tools and software available online or on the laboratory computers. Short Lectures, self-assessment, multimedia tools, short discussion of recent publications related to lecture/laboratory topics, hands-on in silico laboratory, refinement of critical evaluation of scientific literature and presentation skills. Frequent teacher-students interactions to foster discussion and comprehension during the laboratory.
Verifica Apprendimento
The learning process for this laboratory-based course is inherent to the course active participation with acquiring skills and scientific mindset towards computational biology, including the formative final presentation by the students divided in groups. The Course is Pass/Fail. Complete, or at least 75% attendance to the Biocomputing Laboratory accounts for a pass of the course, hence minimum 5 out of 6 sessions attendance. Attendance of less than 75% of the Biocomputing Laboratory leads to a fail of the course.
Testi
Lecture material, research articles discussed in class and any other material pertaining to the course will be made available to the students in Kiro.
Contenuti
The Biocomputing Laboratory is an activity in which students are exposed to hands-on Computer Lab sessions covering topics related to in silico biomedical matters such as: phylogenetic trees, amino acid sequence analysis, protein structure analysis and prediction, rational protein modification and design, protein-protein interaction and drug-protein interaction. Biocomputing sessions are conducted in a mixed mode: lecturer instruction (how to perform operations); students hands-on; knowledge dissemination by the lecturer (handling and interpretation of data, problem understanding and solving and interactive Q & A sessions); performance of remote (web-based databases and software servers) and local (downloaded and installed free computer programs) tasks. Students will acquire essential skills through hands-on laboratory, instrumental for the development of the basic knowledge necessary to interrogate in silico systems (including artificial intelligence agents). The module is divided into six sessions of which the first five take the students progressively deeper into protein design with examples from Faculty research and pathology-related matters. The last session consists in the presentation of essays by the students divided into groups. In the presentations students will have to tackle a biocomputing aspect of their choice yet related to a specific pathology and demonstrate that they familiarized with the bioinformatic tools experienced during the Biocomputing Laboratory module.
