The Crying of Lot 49 di Thomas Pynchon: immaginario, cultura di massa, storia, identità
The Crying of Lot 49 (in italiano L’incanto del lotto 49) è il secondo romanzo di Pynchon, il suo più breve, uscito nel 1966, tre anni dopo l’esordio di V. Il corso si propone un confronto diretto e integrale, basato su letture estese e commento, con il romanzo, per metterne in luce la fittissima trama storico-culturale. Libro letteratissimo, ma anche intessuto di riferimenti alla cultura di massa cinematografica, televisiva e musicale degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, The Crying of Lot 49 riserva un ruolo molto importante anche alle ekphràseis, le descrizioni verbali di prodotti culturali visivi (opere d’arte e non solo, come sarà chiarito durante il corso). Si cercherà di mostrare come quest’opera elusiva, ambigua, che gioca in modo oltranzista con il desiderio di senso del lettore, sia anche un tentativo di romanzo politico sulla storia recente e sull’identità americana.
