The course deals with Sustainable Development issues from a legal perspective, and provides an in-depth legal analyses framework of the design and implementation of sustainability policies by international and supranational organisations (particularly the European Union). Specific Sustainable Development Goals and the related policies and case law will be analysed. Due to a profitable combination of lectures and case analysis requiring an active participation of students, at the end of the course the latter are expected to have acquired a certain expertise in identifying and applying the relevant legal notions learnt during the course to practical cases.
Course Prerequisites
No prerequisite is expressly required. However, the knowledge of basic legal concepts (as acquired during the Bachelor studies) is recommended. The recording of some Introductory lessons is available on the e-learning platform.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and discussion of cases. The active involvement of students, who can give oral presentations on current topics related to the content of the course, is encouraged.
Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a written in-depth analysis carried out by students on a practical case concerning sustainability that has particular legal relevance and is agreed upon by the students with one of the two reference teachers.
Texts
Illustrating materials are prepared by the teachers and are available on the e-learning platform, following the relative lessons. They will include: slides outlining the content of the lessons, documents, reports, judicial decisions, legal texts.

- Two parallel and intertwined paths: the international level and the institutions involved; the EU level and the institutions involved. - Legal issues on Sustainable Development: SD as a judicial interpretive tool; the rights of future generations; the rise of Earth Jurisprudence.
- Sustainable Development Goals: some case studies.
