The effect of transverse multi-mode oscillation in passively mode-locked solid-state lasers

Abstract:
It is shown that the time-varying spatial pattern determined by the multimode beam in the saturable absorber leads to less effective bleaching and mode-locking. This demonstrates the need for high beam quality for effective mode-locking in solid state lasers.
