Abstract:
In this short essay I reply to the comments to my book, Relational Liberalism (Springer 2023), by Giulia Bistagnino, Rossella De Bernardi, Davide Pala, and Tommaso Piazza. From different philosophical perspectives, their comments have pressed me to clarify my paradigm with regard to the theoretical wagers, philosophical, moral and epistemic, I made in this book. Here I clarify some aspects of my proposal, with a specific focus on the tension between the normative request of ascribing a minimum epistemic credibility to fellow citizens as co-authors of democratic decisions and the polarizing mechanisms that are eroding social trust and questioning the public criteria of truth and falseness. I conclude by illustrating a way forward, still in need of theorizing, that I maintain can provide an important follow-up to the relational version of liberal legitimacy that I have defended in the book.
