Syllabus

Course Objectives

The objective of the professional training in the surgical area is to introduce the student to surgical pathology in contact with the patient and in the operating room, so that he/she can participate in an adequate number and variety of surgical procedures (level 1 of learning) as well as learn the methods of access and behavior in the operating room. Following attendance of the internship, the student is expected to acquire an adequate level in the three components of the training:
1) To know: correlation between the theoretical notions acquired during medical studies and their application in the clinical reality of the individual surgical patient.
2) Know-how: direct experience of the methods of behavior in the operating room and of the fundamental clinical manual skills, where possible firsthand or in the most complex cases - observed carried out by the structured medical staff.
3) Knowing How to be: acquisition of the necessary empathy with the surgical patient, gained in direct relationships. Acquisition of communication skills gained in direct and daily contact with the patient and his/her family

Course Prerequisites

The prerequisite for accessing the practical evaluative internship in the surgical area is simply to be enrolled in the 5th year of the degree course

Teaching Methods

"teaching on the job", direct participation in visits followed by a tutor, in clinical meetings to discuss hospitalized cases, attendance at the operating block

Assessment Methods

Final evaluation by the tutor on the basis of what observed during the internship (punctuality, attention, answer to questions during the tour, evaluation of manual dexterity, empathy with the patient, etc.) formulated according to the indications of TPV: a = great ; B = good; C = fair; D = sufficient; E = insufficient

• exposure to the most common pathologies of the surgical department attended (level 1)
• conducting a thorough physical examination of the patient suffering from surgical pathologies (level 2)
• setting of the diagnostic program (level 1)
• exposure to surgical activities, attendance at the operating room (level 1)

More information

Presence is monitored by the department secretariat. Credits and final evaluation awarded only after attending all the activities and all the days foreseen in the internship planning.
