Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aims of the course are to provide the knowledge of the main diseases of the locomotor system and to develop the ability in performing a reasoned clinical examination, in order to put forward a diagnostic hypothesis and prescribe adequate instrumental examinations.
An additional goal of primary importance concerns the ability in evaluating severity, management and prognosis of traumatic injuries of the locomotor system.
A relevant part of the course is dedicated to Pediatric Orthopaedics, with the aim to acquire the knowledge of the most frequent diseases observed during growth. The skills in the pediatric field will help the general practitioner or pediatrician to discriminate the paramorphisms from pathologies and improve therapeutic pathways.

Course Prerequisites

Students of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery are required to possess adequate preparation in histology and anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and pathology, in addition to the basic knowledge of all the introductory courses indicated in the regulation of degree course.
The student must also be aware of the biopsychological, cognitive, emotional and social processes that regulate the doctor-patient relationship, in order to optimize the diagnostic and assistance processes.

Teaching Methods

The lessons will be held in the lecture hall (face-to-face with slide presentation) unless opposite instructions of the Rector to face emergencies.
The course is associated to a clinical ward internship, with presentation and discussion of clinical cases.

Assessment Methods

Oral examination concerning the topics presented in the lecture hall.
Only the students registered on Esse3 within the required deadline will be admitted to the exam.
The evaluation is based on the ability of exposing the required notions in a concise, clear and exhaustive way, using an adequate scientific terminology.
To reach full marks with honors, it is required the knowledge of all the topics included in the course program, not only of those presented in the lecture hall.
