The aim of this course is to provide a scientific basis for the practice of, and research into, respiratory medicine. It will allow students to understand the molecular, cellular and pathophysiological processes of a range of pulmonary diseases and provides the base for thoracic surgery treatment. At the end of the course, students should be able: to perform a clinical examination of a patient with a suspected respiratory illness; to know what are the commonest tools supporting clinical examinations and their diagnostic implications. They should know for each disease: definition, epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical and instrumental diagnostic tools, natural history, complications, therapy, management of the emergency, management of respiratory failure, indications for thoracic surgery, and management of patients with lung transplant. For Respiratory diseases the program includes: Pulmonary function tests, Respiratory failure, Asthma, COPD, Inhalation therapy, Pulmonary thromboembolism, Pulmonary tuberculosis, sleep disorders, Mesothelioma, Lung cancer, Pneumonia, Sarcoidosis, Interstitial lung disease, Pulmonary hypertension, Pulmonary edema Acute, Pleural effusion, Lung transplant and its complications, Bronchiectasis and Cystic Fibrosis, Thoracic Endoscopy, Rare Diseases, Aspergillosis/ABPA
