Syllabus

Course Objectives


The target of the course will be gaining an effective knowledge of the diagnostic and the therapeutic processes involved in treating neurosurgical patients. This knowledge will be indispensable to the future physicians not specifically trained in Neurosurgery to seek neurosurgical assistance for their patients when appropriate, and discuss with the neurosurgeon her/his diagnostic and therapeutic indications.

Course Prerequisites


Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the central and peripheral nervous systems, the cranium and the spinal cord

Assessment Methods


Oral exam, the grade in Neurosurgery contributes to the final grade of the exam of the integrated course in Neurological Sciences. Final grade calculated as a weighted average = (Neurology grade multiplied * 5 + Neurosurgery grade)/6. The "Laude" will be counted as 1 and the final grade of 30/30 cum laude will be awarded to the student who reaches the value 31 once the weighted average has been calculated.

By attending to the lectures and seminars the student will be able to reach a sufficient knowledge of Neurosurgery to fulfill the requirements of the exam.
If she or he prefers a written text there are many resources over the internet provided by the principal neurosurgical associations that are free of charge.
A basic text covering most of Neurosurgery:
Mark S. Grenberg, Handbook of Neurosurgery. Thieme, New York.

1) Intracranial Hypertension and coma.
2) Diagnosis and Neurosurgical Management of Head Trauma and its consequences.
3) Diagnosis and Neurosurgical Management of primitive and secondary tumors of the brain and the spinal cord.
4) Diagnosis and Neurosurgical Management of degenerative and traumaatic pathologies of the spine.
5) Diagnosis and Neurosurgical Management of hemorragic cerebrovascular diseases.
6) Diagnosis and Neurosurgical Management of hydrocephalus and spinal dysraphism.
7) Diagnosis and Neurosurgical Management of neurosurgically treatable pain.
8) Diagnosis and Neurosurgical Management of movement disorders and epilepsy.
