Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the tools necessary to understand the main alterations of the immune response that may be responsible for medical conditions, to recognize and diagnose them by using the appropriate biochemical tools and imaging. The student will be able to recognize the main primary and secondary immunodeficiencies as well as the role of the immune system in transplant rejection and tumor control. Finally, the student will know the principles of treatment of the most important and frequent diseases of the immune system.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Anatomy and Histology is required.

Teaching Methods

Teaching sessions supported by slides.

Assessment Methods

Written test only (multiple choice questions), 30 questions plus an extra one for the laude (that is considered only in the case of 30 correct answers). Only one answer is correct.

tiology and pathophysiology of hypersensitivity reactions type I, II, III and IV, based on the classification of Gell and Coombs, and clinical pictures related to them. Classification and grading of primary and secondary immunodeficiencies.
Monoclonal gammapathies: pathophysiology, laboratory and clinical picture. Tumor immunology, mechanisms of escape from immune control, principles of tumor immunotherapy; immunology of solid organ transplantation, immunology of bone marrow transplantation, mechanisms of rejection; adverse drug reactions, allergic and pseudoallergic reactions, pathophysiology and clinical picture.
