Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The primary goals of this course are:
- the learning of synthetic techniques for the preparation of coordination compounds with different metal cations and different ligands: monodentate, macrocyclic, macrobicyclic
- learning of the use and interpretations of spectroscopic techniques for the investigation and comprehension of the properties of coordination compounds, supramolecular devices and inorganic nanomaterials
- learning of some basic concepts for the synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials
- learning of how choice and use of redox reagents and manipulating conditions capable of stabilizing different oxidation states of metals in coordination compounds

Course Prerequisites

This course requires the basic laboratory techniques learnt during Stechiometria e Laboratorio Chimico (1st year, 1st semester) and fundamental theoretical concepts and notions in the field of general and inorganic chemistry, taught in Chimica Generale e Inorganica and Chimica Generale e Inorganica II in the first and second year.

Teaching Methods

Classes using video projection of power point slides and detailed examples at the blackboard. The class introduces the theoretical topics related to the laboratoy experiment and the procedure of the experiment that will be carried on in the lab. Laboratory experiments, carried on individually, in couples or in groups depending on the availability of fume hoods and instruments. Use of dedicated instruments (spectrophotometers) with the help of tutors and technicians.

Assessment Methods

Writing of lab reports and oral examination. The examination starts with the correction and the discussion of one of the reports. The aim is to verifiy the knowledge of the experimental procedures, the comprehension of the related theoretical concepts and the ability of putting them in relation with the observation made in the lab. The exam can continue with more questions on related arguments and laboratory experiments.

Texts

Optional: to complete and deepen the classes you may use: Huheey Keiter Keiter, "Inorganic Chemistry" or Cotton Wilkinson "Advanced Inorganic Chemistry"

Contents

Classes will be taught in the morning and laboratory experiences will be carried out in the afternoon
During classes, beside detailed informations on the lab experiences, theoretical concepts will be reviewed and deepened on: geometry and coordination number; d orbitals splitting and CFSE as a function of coordination geometry; stability of coordination complexes; chelate, macrocyclic and cryptate effects; redox chemistry and Nernst equation. Basic concepts of Supramolecular Chemistry and Inorganic Nanochemistry will also be explained. Laboratory experiments (requiring approximately 12 afternoons) are:
- Synthesis of Copper(I) chloride
- Synthesis of silver(II)tetrapyridine persulfate
- Synthesis of Manganese(III) tris-acetylacetonate
- Synthesis of [Cu(CH3CN)4]ClO4
- Spectroscopic determination of the stoichiometry of the complex of Cu(I) + 1,10-phenanthroline
- Synthesis of [Co(en)3]Cl3
- Preparation of Prussian Blue and Berlin Green
- Preparation of Fe(III) tris-oxalate
- Template synthesis: [Ni(cyclam)](ClO4)2
- Template synthesis: [Co(diNOsar)]CO3Cl
- Supramolecular chemistry: helicate and monomer preparation from the same ligand with the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple
- Nanochemsitry: preparation of citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles
