Course Objectives


The course of Plant Physiology aims to provide a clear view of the metabolic processes of the plant and the regulation of growth and development by light and hormones.

Course Prerequisites

It is required the knowledge of the contents of the courses of Botany and especially of Biochemistry. In particular, for Botany, it is requested to have knowledge on the plant cell structure, and plant anatomy (tissues and organs). For Biochemistry, it is requested basic knowledge on lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and in particular on enzymes.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons integrated with interactions and discussion with students aimed at improving their ability to critically elaborated the topics of the course.

Assessment Methods

The final exam is a written test on the topics covered by the course. The test lasts 60 minutes and is performed using the University Kiro-testing platform in a computerized classroom. It involves a combination of open questions, multiple choice questions, true/false, matching, choosing the missing words, drag and drop on an image.

Contents

The course program includes: photosynthesis, physiological and ecological considerations; seed maturation and germination; seed quality, physiological aspects (in agreement with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Goal 2, Zero Hunger) Assimilation of mineral nutrients; Transport and translocation of water and solutes; plant hormones: auxin, gibberellins, cytokinin, ethylene, abscissic acid; Phytochrome and the development of the plant controlled by light; Control of flowering.
