Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (01/10/2025 - 16/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course will prepare students for the Reading, Listening and Speaking parts of the IELTS (Academic) exam, and for writing summaries. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in lessons in order to practise their English and become able to understand and communicate in English in a more natural way.

Course Prerequisites

None, although students with a level below B1 (QCER) will need extra time to practise and prepare for the exam.

Teaching Methods

Lessons with the course teacher at a B1/B2 level and optional lessons at a basic level with the course language assistant (addestratore linguistico). Students will attend all lessons in the classroom. The teaching method focuses on developing practical skills rather than theoretical knowledge. The interactive lessons will aim to improve comprehension of spoken English and encourage students to put their spoken English into practice in a more natural way.

Assessment Methods

The English exam will be similar to an Academic IELTS exam but only based on natural sciences topics.
Writing test: one audio of an IELTS listening exam, one text of an IELTS reading exam, and a modified writing exam (a summary of the reading text in 150-180 words).
Speaking test: a shorter IELTS speaking exam (parts 1 and 2)

Texts

All materials will be provided by the teacher on KIRO. Some are the photocopiable pages (no copyright) from the book Expert IELTS 6.0 by Clare Walsh and Lindsay Warwick
Publisher: Pearson
ISBN: 9781292125022

Contents

The main programme is based on some of the contents of the IELTS course book Expert IELTS 6 (see reference text): the modules about Science and the Natural World. Students will also watch various videos about natural sciences topics. In addition, the teacher will provide students with interactive practice material that focuses on the differences between Italian and English. Students will be encouraged to use this practice material between lessons to improve their English level. They will also be given the opportunity to participate in support lessons with the language assistant (addestratore linguistico), especially for low-level students.
