Syllabus

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is to transmit the basic information necessary for a prevention technician to understand the organization and implementation of chemical and biological risk monitoring in the field. The expected learning outcomes are as follows:
1. Knowledge of sampling and monitoring techniques of the main chemical and biological pollutants according to the provisions of Decree 81/2008
2. Understanding of the functioning of the devices used for the measurement of chemical and biological risk
3. Development of basic skills to reprocess and interpret the results of a monitoring to be included in the risk assessment document

Course Prerequisites

The course does not require specific prerequisites.

Teaching Methods

Lectures supported by power point slides. For each topic, the lessons are organized into the following parts:
1. Regulatory framework: the section illustrates the main regulatory aspects, and in particular the reference articles of Decree 81/2008 for the subject matter.
2. Measurement techniques and monitoring devices: it is planned to illustrate the operating principles of the main measurement and sampling instruments
3. Indicators: description of the indicators that can be obtained from the monitoring illustrated and how to interpret the data collected according to the indications prescribed by Decree 81/2008 and in the reference regulations
4. Practical examples: description of real case studies through images or videos to illustrate the monitoring processes starting from the definition of the measurement strategy up to the interpretation of the data.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists in an oral interview organized in two parts:
1. Presentation by the student of a paper necessary to take the exam: description of a monitoring set-up for one of the types of company indicated by the teacher
2. Oral discussion on the topics covered in class

Texts

The course is based on the didactic material and on the handouts provided by the teacher. In addition, during the course of the lectures, the teacher will provide further references to the Guidelines for in-field monitoring on the portals INAIL, OSHA (European Agency for Safety at Work), ECHA (European Chemical Agency).
