Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Module 1:To develop the capacity of applying the most adeguate methods in relation to the considered environmental issues.

Module 2: Through the training course, the student will acquire skills in the planning and implementation of a research project aimed at the conservation of animal biodiversity
The expected learning outcomes are the following:
• Knowledge of the main fauna monitoring techniques (from invertebrates to mammals)
•Knowledge of the main environmental quality indices based on the structure of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrate communities
•Knowledge of the main calculation software for data storage and analysis
•Ability to apply the acquired knowledge to carry out a research project aimed at safeguarding animal biodiversity and natural ecosystems
•Ability to write and present the results of a research project

Course Prerequisites

Module 1:Basis concepts of Ecology and Mycology

Module 2: basic concepts of Vertebrates and Invertebrates zoology.
Basic concepts of Ecology
Basic concepts of Conservation Biology

Teaching Methods

Module 1:The course includes laboratory exercise and field excursions.

Module 2: The course includes laboratory exercises where students will learn to recognize the main animal groups and to use the dichotomous keys for their recognition. A classroom exercise will be dedicated to learning the use of Excel for data storage and for basic statistical analyses. Field excursions will allow students to simulate real sampling.

Assessment Methods

Module 1: Elaboration of data collected during the activities and/or provided by the teacher.

Module 2: The elaboration of a real or invented (but realistic) research project is required to be presented during the exam in PP or pdf format. The project must have all the characteristics of a real research project in which greater emphasis is given to the sampling techniques adopted to carry it out. Through this work, the student must demonstrate that she/he has acquired the contents of the course.

Texts

Module 1: Scientific articles about ecological restoration and bioremediation, lecture notes and handouts given by the teacher

Module 2: Any wildlife monitoring manual, Mostly lecture notes
and handouts given by the teacher in Italian and English

Contents

Module 1. The aim of the course is describing methods of analysis of ecological restoration in lakes and fresh water in general. Students, during a practical laboratory, will learn methods for environmental analysis for the protection and conservation of priority habitat. In addition, students, in a practical laboratory, will select fungal strains for the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-polluted soil and water. The effectiveness of the created consortium will be evaluated through the use of bio-indicators.

Module 2.
The course will describe the main sampling techniques of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Part of the course is dedicated to insect sampling, especially vulnerable and endangered ones or, conversely, exotic and invasive ones. The main environmental quality indices based on the structure of aquatic macro-invertebrate communities (IBE index) and soil microorganisms (QBS index) will also be illustrated.
The course includes several practical exercises aimed at recognizing the main groups of vertebrates and invertebrates with the observation of preparations and in vivo organisms. These exercises will also have the purpose of illustrating to students the use of dichotomous keys in systematic searches.
Finally, some field trips are planned to put some of the acquired sampling techniques into practice.

Course Language

Italian
