Syllabus

Course Objectives

To understand the different types of organic nanoparticles of biological interest, the main strategies for their synthesis and functionalization, and their properties. To understand the primary applications of different types of nanoparticles in the medical and biomedical fields, and to learn how to identify the most suitable type of nanomaterial for each application. To understand specilized applications of nanoparticles/nanomaterials for different therapeutic uses, in cosmetic field, in medical devices.

Course Prerequisites

The course requires basic knowledge in chemistry (organic and inorganic chemistry), anatomy and biochemistry.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical lessons. Innovative teaching will be employed (Learner-centered teaching).
For students with specific needs who are unable to attend in-person educational activities and have applied for Inclusive Educational Methods, appropriate learning materials will be made available for effective independent study. If requested, self-learning can be supported by tutoring or supplementary teaching activities, as well as dedicated meetings, including online sessions, with flexible scheduling based on the students' needs.

Assessment Methods

Oral presentation (in groups of max. 3), on a topic selected from those proposed during the course, with discussion at the end of the course – 30% of final grade. Multiple-choice test – 70% of final grade. Tailored examination procedures are implemented for students classified under Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) and Special Educational Needs (SEN), in accordance with applicable regulations and institutional guidelines.

Texts

All educational material is provided on the Kiro platform. There is no required textbook for the course.

Contents

Critical knowledge of design and use of organic nanomaterials/nanotechnologies (i.e polymeric and lipidic nanoparticles, micro/nanobubbles, etc.) for specialized biomedical applications (i.e. brain-delivery, ocular delivery), and their use in medical devices and cosmetic field. Properties and technological applications of nanomaterials: drug loading, intracellular uptake, and delivery; photothermal and magnetothermal response.
