Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to enable students to understand the fundamental methods of data analysis provided by classical statistics. By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse an experimental problem, identify the most appropriate analysis methods (hypothesis testing, fitting, error propagation, etc.), and apply them correctly and reproducibly.
In particular, students will be able to select and construct appropriate data representations (histograms, densities, etc.), estimate parameters and their uncertainties, and assess the quality of a model through the analysis of residuals, χ², and p-values. They will also be able to propagate and interpret uncertainties in measured physical quantities, compare models, and determine whether the results justify the use of alternative techniques.

Course Prerequisites

The mathematical tools of the math courses of the first year are employed. No other mathematical prerequisites are requested.
The notions of the course of Data Analysis I are assumed as known by the student. However, many of these notions are reconsidered in greater detail and with a different formalism in this course.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is conducted through oral lectures, supported by presentations, will be provided to students in PDF format through the Kiro platform. The concepts covered in class are then applied through computer-based laboratories, using the C/C++ programming languages and the ROOT framework. During the laboratories, students learn how to load real or simulated datasets, build histograms, perform fits with known functions, carry out statistical tests, estimate and propagate uncertainties, produce plots, and evaluate the goodness of the model while interpreting the physical results.

Assessment Methods

Written exam with problems in probability and statistics; evaluation of the activities carried out during the data-analysis laboratories; oral examination with questions covering the topics addressed during the course.

Texts

A. Rotondi, P.Pedroni, A.Pievatolo, Probabilità, Statistica e Simulazione, Springer Verlag, 4th edition, 2021.
