Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Acquisition of the concepts and tools necessary to perform a reservoir study and build a three-dimensional geological model of the subsoil that can be used to simulate the movement of fluids. These models can be used to simulate fluids production (water, Hydrocarbon), storage (CO2, H2) or for geothermal purposes.

Course Prerequisites

Basics of: mathematics such as statistics, algebra, geometry, derivatives, general and organic chemistry and the main physical processes of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. Basic knowledge of the geological disciplines, in particular sedimentology (depositional systems and diagenetic phenomena), mineralogy (mineralogical components of clastic and carbonate deposits), elements of structural geology (faults, folds, fractures).

Teaching Methods

The different themes will be addressed by various specilized Teachers with lectures (in classroom 50% - online 50%)

Assessment Methods

There is an oral exam which can be in English or Italian (at the student's choice). The exam will be characterized by a first topic covered during the course, chosen by the student, followed by at least three other questions about other topics . The use of educational material, to evaluate the candidate's learning level and reasoning skills is not excluded.

Texts

Contents

Purpose of the course is to provide participants with the basics of reservoir studies, i.e. those multidisciplinary activities aimed at the physical characterization of reservoir rocks . We will go into detail on how to distribute these properties in the subsurface, building complex structural and geological models for the simulation of subsurface fluid flows. These models can be used to describe aquifers, groundwater movements, hydrocarbon production, gas or CO2 storage, geothermal flows. The course also covers the technologies available for the characterization of fractured rocks and the assessment and management of uncertainty during a reservoir study. They will be also discussed the basic concepts of dynamic simulation of the fluids movements in the subsurface as well as some concepts of geomechanics (subsidence) and carbon dioxide capture and storage for sustainable development and for the reduction of greenhouse gases released into the environment.
