Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the student with essential semeiological and clinical elements to recognise the main clinical pictures of the child neuropsychiatric area in relation to intellectual disabilities
The course contents will be addressed taking into consideration the
ethical-deontological principles that, depending on the specific topic, will be
described in detail by the lecturer, both from a theoretical point of view and
with direct connection to practical activity (e.g. through the discussion
of example cases).

Course Prerequisites

The course is part of the IC in NEUROPSICOLOGY, NEUROLINGUISTICS AND NEUROCOGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT REHABILITATION
To better follow the course the student must have taken the courses in clinical psychology and general psychology

Teaching Methods

Lectures and video sessions within the integrated course
Frontal lectures are supplemented by interaction spaces in which the training objective is to train participants in the observation and description of neurological and psychiatric semeiology, particularly emphasising how the exercise of observation and description is essential for a shared multi-professional interpretation.
As part of the University's Inclusive Education activities, the lecturer guarantees up to 2 hours of reception time per week, to be agreed with the lecturer by e-mail.

Assessment Methods

The examination at the end of the Course consists of a multiple-choice quiz test
30 quizzes, graded 30/30 (one mark per quiz). The mark is averaged with the marks of the individual IC modules and is published on the ad hoc website

Texts

Lecture slides will be provided in which students can also find numerous bibliographical citations for further study.

Contents

Intellectual disabilities and psychomotor retardation: epidemiology definition, higher cognitive functions and adaptive functions. Assessment and the Rosenthal effect. Adolescent intelligence tests. Aetiology of intellectual disability. Genetic syndromes and peculiarities of cognitive functioning in syndromic and malformative pictures.
