Overview

Date/time interval

Syllabus

Course Objectives

at the end of the course the student must know the peculiarities of the development of the child with visual disorder, what visual disorders are in pediatric age and understand how these impact on general neuropsychomotor development and apply the tools of neuropsychomotor observation and visual functional evaluation to identify the clinical signs of these visual disorders in order to be able to evaluate the clinical signs and identify the objectives of rehabilitation treatment

Course Prerequisites

the understanding of the topics covered within this module requires the student to be in possession of the notions of general anatomy, anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, as well as notions of the anatomy of the visual system and the pathologies connected to it

Teaching Methods

the teaching uses frontal lessons with video projections where the active participation of the students is required in the observation and analysis of the clinical cases presented. This teaching takes place in conjunction with the professional internship, where the student has the opportunity to see the tools presented from a theoretical point of view and the related working methodology applied in the field.

Assessment Methods

Learning is verified through an oral exam and will focus on the topics covered in class and in which the knowledge acquired is tested both in terms of clinical observation methodologies and the ability to know and apply the tools for quantitative evaluation.

Contents

the course aims to provide knowledge on the development of visually impaired/blind children and useful tools for the observation/evaluation of children with visual disorders

the program and contents are as follows:
-qualitative evaluation: observation of visual functions in the context of neuropsychomotor observation
-quantitative evaluation of visual functional aspects: use of instruments for measuring visual acuity of resolution (Teller Acuity Cards), recognition (LEA symbol optotypes or lettered optotypes), contrast sensitivity (Hiding Heiding, LEA Symbols, optotypes) , instruments for color perception (Ishiara test), instruments for stereopsis (Lang stereotest, TNO)
-protocol for the evaluation of alternative senses (sound-touch) of reach and touch on sound
-specific developmental scales for visually impaired/blind children (reynell Zinkin; Oregon Project)
