Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the student with the cognitive and methodological tools so that at the end of the course the student:
Know the environmental determinants of human health
Knows how to evaluate the potential health effects of environmental exposures
Know the categories of population most susceptible to environmental exposures
Be able to plan interventions to limit exposure to environmental risk factors
Is able to interact with medical professionals, biologists, engineers in the design and implementation of interventions to measure and reduce exposure to environmental pollutants

Course Prerequisites

The understanding of the topics covered in the course requires that the student possess the fundamental notions of the following disciplines: chemistry, biochemistry and physics; human anatomy, biology, human physiology

Teaching Methods

Frontal teaching with the support of audio-visual tools, classroom exercises, discussion of case studies

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test using multiple choice tests.
The test includes 21 questions with 4 possible answers (each question has only one correct answer) worth 1 point each + 2 open questions, one worth 6 points and the other worth 4 points. The time available for delivery is 60 minutes.
For those who are entitled to it, upon notification, the foreseen extra-time procedures will be activated.

The test is considered passed with a score of not less than 18/30. A score of 31 corresponds to 30/30 cum laude.

Definition, basic concepts and tasks of Hygiene. Epidemiology and general prevention of non-infectious diseases: Causes and risk factors. Genetic, environmental (biological, physical, chemical), behavioral (eating habits, smoking habits, alcohol abuse, drug use, sedentary lifestyle) risk factors. Prevention: in the living, working environment. The environment and its factors; relationships with health. Environmental pollution. The chemical risk, main pathological effects. Case study 1. Air pollution. Case study 2: Smells. Case Study 3: Urban Health.
