Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide future prevention technicians with the skills to assess the environmental impact of energy systems and the remediation technologies aimed at its containment. In particular, the course focuses on issues related to noise pollution and provides hints for the assessment of environmental pollution with a focus on CO2 emissions. At the end of the course, the student will know basic notions concerning: environmental acoustics (outdoor), outdoor - noise pollution evaluation. He will also have learned the methodologies for setting up an assessment of environmental CO2 emissions due production plants.

Course Prerequisites

Basic mathematical knowledge is required. Moreover, Applied Physics module exam, belonging to the course "Physics, Statistics and Epidemiology" in the first year of the study course, should be successfully passed.

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures through the support of power point slides that will be supplemented by practical examples and written exercises.
Moreover, the book "L'impatto ambientale dei sistemi energetici" di Giorgio Cau Daniele Cocco edito da S.G.E., 2015 is reccomended as reference

Assessment Methods

The exam is written and includes two parts: a series of multiple-choice questions, and some open questions on the topic presented during the lectures.

Texts

The course will be based on materials provided by the teacher (such as booklet and slides), which will be uploaded to the Kiro portal.

Contents

The course program includes:
- Basic notions about the main acoustic parameters
- Hints about noise propagation outdoor.
- External environment: noise sources in the urban area; produced disturbance evaluation criteria;
- Notes about environment protection from noise pollution.
- Urbanised territory noise mapping
- Laws about concerning limits and measurement techniques.
- Main indicators for environmental noise impact evaluation
- The energy consumption of production processes
- Energy and CO2 emission assessment methodologies
- Thermal and environmental pollution: parameters and approach for quantification
- Evaluating the impact of traditional and renewable energy systems
- Cost/benefit analysis: scope, methodology and result analysis
