Syllabus

Course Objectives

To learn methods on microbiological, chemical and physical characterization of water and waste water.
To understand the effects of pollutants release in the environment (origin and type), diffusion, persistence.
To be aware about water legislation and risk analysis.
To understand biodegradation phenomena of organic matter.
To understand activated sludge wastewater treatment plants working principles - in both water and sludge compartments.
Learn basic concepts of waste analysis, treatment and disposal, and related legislation.
Understand basic principles of disposal of leachates, wastewater sludge and organic waste.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of chemistry is required.

Teaching Methods

The course is carried out through lectures.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test or an individual oral test. The aim is to verify the skills acquired during the course. The final evaluation will be based on the degree of depth and understanding of the topics.

Texts

The teaching material is provided by the teacher during the course. This material is uploaded before the lessons on the KIRO portal of the University of Pavia in order to allow students to follow the lessons. The contents of the handouts are taken from various texts reported by the teacher during the course.
