Updated Learning Objective (English version with emphasis on professional policies) Through the knowledge acquired during the course, the student will be able to identify, understand, and critically analyse the key reference points for nursing practice across hospital and community settings. Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of professional policies in shaping practice standards, service organisation, educational models, and the development of nursing research. The student will understand how such policies influence care quality, patient safety, and the well-being of individuals, recognising their impact on daily clinical practice and on the advancement of the nursing profession.

The course will be delivered through a combination of frontal lectures and active learning strategies designed to foster critical analysis and professional reflection. Specifically, the teaching methods will include: Frontal lectures providing theoretical frameworks, policy analysis, and organisational perspectives relevant to nursing practice. Guided critical reflection, starting from students’ professional experience, to connect theoretical concepts with practical implications in clinical and organisational settings. Case-based discussions focused on ethical issues, organisational models, staffing policies, and missed nursing care, aimed at strengthening decision-making and analytical skills. Interactive debate sessions on professional policies, leadership, and governance in nursing, encouraging comparison of evidence, norms, and international standards. Review and discussion of selected scientific articles, promoting evidence-based reasoning and the ability to interpret and apply research findings to real-world situations.

The course bibliography will consist of a selection of recent scientific articles identified through a targeted review of national and international literature. The recommended readings will include: Professional and regulatory documents (e.g., Code of Ethics for the Nursing Professions, national and international standards and position statements). Articles on professional nursing policies, governance, organisational models, and professional development. Scientific evidence on missed nursing care, staffing, patient safety, and care quality. Research studies and systematic reviews addressing the relationship between organisational factors, professional policies, and clinical outcomes. Building on their own professional experience, students will be guided through a critical reflection on: Code of Ethics for the Nursing Professions (2019) and its ethical, professional, and organisational implications. Professional nursing policies, including the analysis of national and international regulations, professional standards, development strategies, and their impact on clinical practice, quality of care, and service governance. Organisational models across hospital and community settings, and their relationship with professional policies, patient safety, and continuity of care. Missed nursing care as a phenomenon influenced by professional policies, organisational determinants, and leadership choices. Understaffing, staffing policies, and patient safety, with an in-depth review of evidence on their impact on care outcomes, staff well-being, and the sustainability of healthcare services.
