Syllabus

Course Objectives

1- Describe the methodology for conducting a systematic review with meta-analysis, with particular reference to the data extraction phase, as a fundamental element for data analysis.
2- Provide the elements for the interpretation of the results of a meta-analysis in different contexts (clinical, organizational and policy).

The course is part of one of the activities chosen by the student.

Assessment Methods

Development of a document/report that summarizes the key concepts of the course, through the student's response to three questions, one of which is optional, on the key concepts emphasized during the course (rationale for conducting a meta-analysis and interpretation of a meta-analysis).

Definition of systematic review and meta-analysis and related key concepts, with particular reference to the formulation of the research question and rationale related to the design of a meta-analysis.
Phases of the systematic review with meta-analysis, risk of bias assessment and data extraction.
Measurements of the effect of a treatment, with particular reference to the different types of meta-analyses.
Statistical methods for meta-analyses: fixed effects models and random effects models.
Graphical visualization of the results of a meta-analysis through the forest plot.
Definition and quantification of heterogeneity between studies.
Methods for exploring heterogeneity: notes on subgroup analysis and meta-regression.
