Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 16/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

1) Knowing the role of pathological anatomy within a modern integrated multidisciplinary diagnostic approach, enhancing the aspects related to both traditional histopathological examination and the application of the most recent ancillary diagnostic techniques, including immunomolecular test. 2) Knowing the main anatomical-pathological alterations of the organs and systems as a need to understand and explain the pathophysiology and clinical symptoms associated with the various diseases. 3) To be able to understand the anatomical-pathological reports, integrating them with the clinical, laboratory and radiological data, and to extrapolate the diagnostic and prognostic-predictive information useful for the most appropriate therapeutic choices.

Course Prerequisites

In order to be able to adequately address the pathological anatomy study and thus to undergo the examination, it is appropriate to have an adequate knowledge of fundamental teachings such as: a) Biology And genetics, b) Histology, c) Human anatomy, d) Human physiology, e) Immunology and general pathology

Teaching Methods

Lectures, case studies on diagnostic samples. Professors are available for clarification on the topics of the program.

Assessment Methods

Written exam with multiple questions including 2 open questions (0-4 points for each ) and 25 multiple choise questions (0-1 point each) aimed at ascertaining the knowledge acquired on the anatomo-pathological features of the different pathologies in correlation with clinical, semeiological and laboratory-instrumental data and the ability to critically interpret the meaning of ancillary and molecular examinations in the diagnostic context. The assessment will also take into account the ability to communicate and use an appropriate scientific language.

Texts

Robbins, Pathological Basis of Diseases.

Contents

PRINCIPLES OF ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY: Diagnostic pathways in anatomy pathology. Main diagnostic methodologies and ancillary techniques such as immunohistochemistry, ISH, FISH, PCR and rtPCR, NGS in a modern laboratory of pathological anatomy: basic technical principles and major application areas. As example of their application some neoplastic lesions were examined: neoplasms of the stomach, Lung carcinoma, endometrial carcinoma, tumors of the thyroid, HPV related neoplastic e preneolastic lesions.
