The course offers an approach to public administration organizations derived from Sociology of organizations. Consequently, it aims at providing students with theoretical and conceptual tools by which should allow them to understand the organizational structures, the functioning logics and the change dynamics of public administration organizations as complex organizations. At the end of the course, students should not have only learnt concepts and theories, but above all an apparatus of analytical and interpretative tools by which operate and intervene competently within various organizations belonging to the public administration sector
Course Prerequisites
No specific prerequisite is requested, although at least a basic knowledge in Sociology of Organization and/or Organizational Scienceis useful.
Teaching Methods
Lectures will be delivered in the traditional frontal teaching modality.
Assessment Methods
Exam will be in presence and consists in closed-answer test lasting 1 hour

Accordingly to aims exposed, the course’s program is structured in the following 10 topics: - Bureaucracy ideal-type (Weber) - Different types of Bureaucracy (mechanic and professional bureaucracy) - Unexpected effects of Bureaucracy (Merton; Crozier) - The organizational change dynamics, in general terms and specifacally for Public Administration organizations. - Specific organizational characteristics of Public Administration organizations in relation to other types of organizations. - Historical developmento of Public Administration in Italy - From Public Management to New Public Management - Context of development of New Public Management paradigm - New Public Management main features - Organizational and social effects of New Public Management - New Public Managrment reform and changes in the Italian Public Administration
