Syllabus

Course Objectives

• Promote the culture of sustainability, also through knowledge of the contents of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
• Provide the basis for understanding the complexity of sustainability, assuming an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective.
• Promote the development of critical and systemic thinking, as well as other transversal skills related to sustainability.
• Promote responsible behaviors with respect to the environment, people, the territory, the future.
The expected learning objectives are first of all a deeper attention to the concept of sustainability in the different fields of study, in daily life and in possible work environments. The student must acquire awareness of the strong interrelations existing between different themes and learn to recognize their relative environmental, social and economic connotations.

Course Prerequisites

The course aims to provide participants with a path of Sustainability Literacy and is part of a national experiment involving the 86 universities adhering to the Network of Universities for Sustainable Development (RUS).
No specific prerequisites are necessary

Teaching Methods

The lessons will be held in the form of thematic seminars through the presentation of Power Point slides with case-based teaching and conversational teaching.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test in the form of a test delivered through the elearning.unipv.it platform in which the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired knowledge on the topics covered during the lessons and that he/she has processed the information by making logical connections.

Lecture notes and teaching materials made available online by teachers.
We also recommend materials, videos, and scientific articles suggested in class by teachers.

Contents

• History of the concept of sustainable development and overview of the most significant people and events.
• The three main dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social.
• The 17 goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030.
• Focus on some environmental sustainability issues, problems and possible solutions, with particular reference to the global climate crisis and sustainable use of energy.
• Measuring sustainability.
• Sustainability in the context of businesses
• Education for sustainability.

The course is in line with the indications of the Network of Universities for Sustainability (RUS) and has provided for the establishment of a scientific committee composed of the sustainability referents of the various departments and the staff of the university sustainability office - OSA.
