Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides the basic knowledge for aquatic ecosystem mapping; it covers basic principles and physically based modelling for turning optical satellite data into bio-physical measurements. Specific lectures on the PRISMA mission will enable to familiarise with hyperspectral technology and related applications.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge about physics (electromagnetic waves), remote sensing sensors (passive and active sensors) and data (digital numbers, processing levels).

Teaching Methods

Lectures and interactive discussion and experiments using an open access software.

Assessment Methods

The students will be asked to attend an interactive session with Q&A every day, plus a dedicated session in the last day of the courses. The evaluation will be based on their ability to reply and discuss the proposed topics.

Texts

The slides used by the teacher will be provided, together with a list of relevant books and literature papers.

Contents

Overview of optical remote sensing; physical principles of electromagnetic radiation.
Overview of hyperspectral sensors from satellite, airborne and in situ platforms; hyperspectral signature analysis; imaging spectrometry in comparison to multispectral data
The PRISMA Mission
Approaches for image processing and classification techniques; radiometric and atmospheric correction; classification, PCA, principles of calibration and data validation.
Analysis of temporal and spatial variation of maps and bio-geophysical parameters extracted from imaging spectrometry in synergy with other optical satellite missions (e.g., Sentinel-2). Applications for the study of different ecosystems (in particular for aquatic environments and vegetation).
