Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at providing the students with an in-depth knowledge of all-electric and hybrid electric vehicle propulsion systems, specifically focusing on the application of power electronics and electric drives to improve energy efficiency and fuel consumption, extend the driving range, and achieve adequate performance. At the end of the course, students will know the main components and architectures of both conventional and electric drivetrains and comprehend their operating principles, they will be able to chose between modern electric motor and power electronic converter technologies the most suited for electric propulsion systems applications. Furthermore, students will learn the general criteria for the design of an electric drivetrain and the implementation of the drive control strategy. They will also be able to analyse and critically evaluate its performance in relation to the traction application requirements.

Course Prerequisites

Single- and three-phase electrical circuits, operating principles of the main electrical machines and power electronics converters, fundamentals of control theory.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, featured through PowerPoint presentations and insights, and guided exercises on the topics of the course.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral examination that includes the presentation of a project, aimed at assessing the acquisition of the knowledge and skills related to the course contents. The final evaluation is based on the level of understanding, integration, and presentation of the topics covered.

Texts

The slides and other documents prepared and used by the teacher during the course will be available for the students via the KIRO platform.
