Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The lectures present a few basic concepts concerning functional characteristics, design and application of converter-fed electrical machines, in particular induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM or brushless motors). A few hints on their control and transient behavior are given: various regulation schemes, e.g. Field Oriented Control, are introduced for torque and speed control for operation in both the constant-torque and field-weakening range.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Electrical Drives: A,b,c → d,q transformation, vector representation of 3phase variables; Induction Machine: Vector equation system on a rotating reference frame; 2-level 3-phase inverter operation: configurations, definition of Voltage Vectors, generation of Gating Signals; Closed-loop controlled Voltage Source Inverter; Vector diagrams of electric variables; ....

Teaching Methods

Lectures (hours/year in lecture theatre): 30

Assessment Methods

Written exams sessions will be scheduled in presence, with a short list of topics with multiple questions (open answers). In case, an oral integration can be proposed in order to reach a sufficient score. The interest displayed during the lectures can contribute to the final evaluation.

Texts

Here follows a list of textbooks free downloadable and related to EDs. Additional material (notes, books, slides, links, technical papers, handbooks and so on) will be given during the lectures.
