Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the learning module is to explore the technological issues of nanosized therapeutic systems with special focus on the formulation processes and the quality control of nanotechnology-based medicines. With this course, the student shall be able to: - describe the nanosystems illustrated and distinguish them on the basis of their composition, sizes, morphological and surface properties; - illustrate the methods and the techniques used respectively for the synthesis and characterization of nanosystems; - understand the formulation strategies used for drug loading and delivery according to the therapeutic target.

Course Prerequisites

The course requires basic knowledge in chemistry (organic and inorganic chemistry), anatomy and biochemistry. To successfully follow the course, it is helpful for the student to have knowledge of the formulation of traditional pharmaceutical dosage forms.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical lessons. Innovative teaching will be employed (Learner-centered teaching). For students with specific needs who are unable to attend in-person educational activities and have applied for Inclusive Educational Methods, appropriate learning materials will be made available for effective independent study. If requested, self-learning can be supported by tutoring or supplementary teaching activities, as well as dedicated meetings, including online sessions, with flexible scheduling based on the students' needs.

Assessment Methods

Final written examination focused on the program of the whole course (modules 1 and 2). Multiple choice questions. The exam will evaluate the level of learning achieved by the student on the contents of the lectures, the reference text and the proposed literature will be evaluated. Appropriate examination methods are provided for students who fall within the categories identified for Specific Learning Disorders and Special Educational Needs.

Contents

The course faces the main nanoparticulate delivery systems made of polymers (micelles, nanospheres and capsules) and lipids (liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured lipid nanoparticles), inorganic nanoparticles (silica and metallic nanoparticles) and nanocrystals. Preparation procedures and characterization were analyzed. Special focus on nanomedicines available on the market and in clinical trials.
