Syllabus

Course Objectives

Understand the basic concepts of immunology intended as an integrated defense system. Identify the roles of the immune system in protecting against pathogens and in maintaining the Identify and the function of its various components, including cells, tissues, and organs. Differentiate and integrate the mechanisms of innate and adaptive immune responses. Analyze the cellular and molecular basis of immune recognition and activation. Elucidate the interactions between the immune system and infectious agents. Investigate immunological disorders and the underlying causes. Explore different immunotherapies and their applications in human disease treatment.

Course Prerequisites

Training in the following areas taught e.g. in a BSc or BPharm course: Calculus, Physics, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, General Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology. Competence in Molecular Biology is recommended but not mandatory.

Teaching Methods

Lectures supported by presentation of slides in Power Point. Key topics will be also supported by specific presentations, discussions and critical reading of the most recent research and review papers published in relevant journals in the field.

Assessment Methods

Oral Exam. The student will be given the opportunity to illustrate live and independently the contents, mechanisms and decision-making paths acquired during the course. The assessment of learning will take place through a final oral exam in person with a grade expressed out of thirty; there are no ongoing tests. Three types of questions will be asked: one in a conversational form, one in the form of a direct question and answer and one based on the description of a pattern or a morpho-functional aspect among those illustrated in class and contained in the recommended textbook.

More information

The course adheres both to the Innovative and the Inclusive teaching programs of the University and therefore it will be supported by tutoring or supplementary teaching activities, carried out on a one-to-one basis with on-line calls or with small class live meetings, upon requests by any student and in accord with the tutor's and under the teacher's supervision. One limitation only will be put: tutoring activities will be not held during scheduled lesson hours. The professor will provide to disabled students the most suitable (excluding the textbook) teaching material, such as videos that deal with the exam topics and, when possible, will use teaching methods that encourage group activities. The course is not a distance learning one but promotes integration between students from all over the World. and will adhere to intellectual property regulations. Teaching material will be available to registered students. Overall, the course will be held live, including exams, but learning and evaluation could take advantage of innovative and inclusive teaching methods, including e-learning ones.
