Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the student with the basis for understanding the operating principles of selected solid-state devices, starting from the existing relationships between the structural, electronic and magnetic characteristics of the materials that constitute them, and their related functional properties.
At the end of the classes, the student is supposed to:
1. know the operating principles of the solid-state devices covered in the course;
2. be able to classify the materials that constitute them according to their characteristics in terms of composition, crystalline structure, electrical conduction properties;
3. know how to correlate the structural and functional properties of materials to the operating principles of a specific solid-state device.
4. know how to discuss the morphological and microstructural characteristics and the optimal form (powders, compacts, films, single crystals) that a material must have according to its intended use in a specific solid-state device.

Course Prerequisites

A knowledge of the basic aspects of classical thermodynamics is required, in particular of the chemical equilibrium, of the crystalline and electronic structure of materials.

Teaching Methods

Lectures

Assessment Methods

Oral interviews aimed at evaluating the ability to correlate chemical-physical phenomena with the operating mechanisms of the devices covered in the course.

Texts

There is not a standard textbook.
The lecture slides are available to the students. The teachers provide references to the relevant review papers of the current scientific literature.

Contents

The course aims to illustrate the operating principles of some selected categories of solid state devices and the properties of the materials on which these devices are based. They examine each other in particular
a) semiconductors (inorganic and organic) and corresponding devices;
b) liquid crystals, with related applications in devices;
c) thermoelectric materials and their applications;
d) superconducting materials and related applications;
e) ionic conductors and applications, particularly in gas sensors;
f) hints at photovoltaic devices (semiconductor, polymer, Graetzel cells).
g) dielectric materials and their applications;
h) piezoelectric materials and their applications.
Based on the students' previous knowledge, the course may include an introductory part on basic topics (the band structure of solids, point defects and solid electrolytes, electrode processes, coupled transport processes, magnetism).

Course Language

Italian

More information

With reference to the guidelines for teaching procedures for the current academic year, the students who demonstrate to fulfill the conditions given in attachment A will benefit from the whole material provided to all other students with the addition of up to 2 hours per week for support by the lecturer, either in presence or online, to be arranged directly with the lecturer at least one week in advance.
