Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Aim of the course is to provide students with the appropriate practical and conceptual tools for developing advanced techiniques for the synthesis and structural characterization of solids.
At the end of the course, the student should be able to plan the preparation of a material of interest and to characterize it from the point of view of long-and short-range order

Course Prerequisites

Physical chemistry notions, mainly thermodynamics

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons. For all the three modules, the topics treated during the lessons, will be explained also during the laboratory activities in groups of 3-4 students

Assessment Methods

Oral exam: the student must demonstrate that he / she has understood all the topics covered during the lessons, with particular emphasis on laboratory exercises. The students will prepare a relations on the laboratory experience that will be discussed during the oral examination

Texts

Educational material given by the teachers and uploaded on the Kiro plarform

Contents

The course is divided into three parts:
The first part deals with the foundaments of crystallography: symmetry elements, symmetry operators, crystal systems and classes, space groups, kinematic theory of X-ray diffation
In the second part the structural refinement methods on powder X-ray diffraction data will be treated. In particular, the Rietveld method useful to determine the main structural and microstructural parameters as well as to quantify the crystalline and amorphous components will be described.
In the third part, the principles of some electrochemical techniques will be explained and some example taken from literature will be analyzed

Course Language

Italian

More information

For students who certify that they are in one of the fragile conditions and who cannot follow the lessons in person, the teacher will guarantee up to 2 hours of reception time per week, also online. Video recordings on the lessons topics may be also provided for independent study.
