Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide comprehensive knowledge about the materials and analytical techniques used in the field of restoration chemistry.

Course Prerequisites

Good knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry. Knowledge of the
basic principles of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods aimed at acquiring transversal skills: lectures held in the classroom and visits to the Arvedi laboratories of the University of Pavia (Pavia and Cremona), dedicated to diagnostics and restoration chemistry.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam (approximately 45 minutes). The members of the committee will verify the gained knowledge through a series of questions and assess the mastery and depth of the acquired content, as well as the ability to identify

Contents

The course begins with an introduction to the historical background, significance, and real-case applications of chemical materials and methods used in the cultural heritage conservation. It then explores the chemical principles involved in analyzing, treating, and preserving cultural heritage items by examining their material composition, degradation processes, and the chemical properties of conservation materials and techniques. Key topics include: description and application of materials such as pigments, natural and synthetic polymers, terpene resins, oleic acids and protein binders, inorganic binders, adhesives, and nanomaterials; diagnostic analysis using both invasive and non-invasive instrumental techniques; study of degradation processes and preservation methods; and techniques and agents used in the restoration and consolidation of artifacts. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of both the theoretical background and practical applications of major microscopic (optical, digital and stereo microscopes, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with associated energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)) and spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, micro-FTIR, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and IR reflectography) employed in the conservation science. The course also includes hands-on laboratory sessions, focusing on specific sample preparation methods and their analysis using the aforementioned instrumental techniques.
