Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the historiographical and interdisciplinary tools for the historical study of contemporary cultures. After a preliminary introduction, the course will focus on a monographic study of the phenomenon of conspiracy theories in contemporary age, with particular reference to Western history from 19th to early 21st century. Conspiracy theory is understood as the belief in the real existence of imagined conspiracies. In terms of expected learning outcomes, the teaching module aims at the acquisition by students of the ability to identify, analyse and critically interpret the topics addressed by the course, and to develop autonomous judgements on them on the basis of the proposed methodologies. In addition to the mastery of the scientific literature on the topic, it is therefore intended to stimulate the ability to relate contributions to each other. The students will also be urged to develop a good ability to communicate in written and oral form with appropriate language.

Course Prerequisites

Good knowledge of contemporary history.

Teaching Methods

The course will take the form of a seminar, and therefore an active and constant participation of students will be required. Lessons will be divided between a theoretical part, by the teacher, and a part of collective work in the classroom, during which the teacher will accompany the students in the analysis and discussion of some texts and contexts. During the first few weeks of the course, participants will be able to agree with the teacher on an individual reading (or group of readings), on which they will give a short oral presentation in class according to an agreed schedule.

Assessment Methods

Active participation in all phases of the course, and contribution to the discussion, will be an integral part of the evaluation. For attending students, the oral reports assigned by the teacher during the seminar will be considered as an exam (50% of the grade). Furthermore, at the end of the course, each student will deliver a written report consisting of a bibliographic review on a subject agreed with the teacher. The report will then be discussed with the teacher during the exam (50% of the grade). For non-attending students the exam will be oral and it will assess the students' knowledge of the texts indicated in the syllabus.

Texts

For those students who wish to take the examination in seminar form, the texts will be agreed with the lecturer.
Attending students who wish to take the examination in the traditional oral form must present the texts from list 1) plus one of their choice from list 2).

Contents

The single subject course aims to trace a cultural history of conspiracy theories in contemporary times, from 18th century revolutions to QAnon. It is intended to provide a critical overview of the main contemporary 'conspiracy theories', from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 21st century. That is, the course aims to identify and analyse, through targeted examples, some of the conspiracy fantasies that have circulated in Western societies (Europe and North America) over the last two centuries. After having been a marginal object of social enquiry, the phenomenon of conspiracy has come back into the limelight in the last two decades, stimulating social scientists, psychologists, and finally even historians to address this issue more systematically. And yet, in the face of a proliferating output of publications, conspiracy still largely eludes satisfactory historical analysis and theorization. The course therefore aims to first provide some analytical tools and then put them to work through the timely analysis of case studies ranging from the the myth of secret societies to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, from the myth of Jewish Bolshevism to the Red Scare of the 1950s, from the conspiracy fantasies of the Third Reich to the repressive machine of Stalinism, to the recent conspiracy theories revolving around QAnon, the community that claims the existence of a Deep State conspiring against US President Donald Trump. The first part of the course will consist of lectures led by the teacher. After a few introductory lectures, during which some studies and methodological tools for the study of conspiracy fantasies will be discussed, the course will move on to case studies, with a focus on the state of the scientific literature, the types of sources mobilised, and the interpretative proposals that have emerged so far. In the second part, attending students will be invited to hold short seminars, discussing individual interpretations and case studies in dialogue with the class.
