Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Organic Chemistry Module (6 credits). The aim of this module is to provide the basic knowledge to understand, rationalise and predict shapes, structures and reactivity of organic molecules.

Laboratory of Organic Chemistry Module (3 credits). The laboratory module aims to provide students with the practical knowledge of basic organic chemistry through experimental laboratory activities.

Course Prerequisites

Fundamentals of General and Inorganic Chemistry: Ionic and covalent bonds; Lewis structures, distance, energy and polarity of the bonds. Resonance concept. Formal charge and oxidation number. Acids and bases.

Teaching Methods

Organic Chemistry (6 credits)
Lecturing activity and problem solving tutorials.
Working students (or equivalent certified conditions) are supported on request with additional teaching material, including video recordings and two weekly hours of tutorials

Laboratory of Organic Chemistry Module (3 credits):
Experimental activity in an organic chemistry laboratory.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written examination made by 15 questions (2 point each) on the theoretical aspects of the course, with particular emphasis on the reactivity of the functional groups embedded in organic molecules involved in bio-transformations.

Laboratory of Organic Chemistry Module (3 credits):
The exam consists of a written report concerning the laboratory activities

Texts

Organic Chemistry Module (6 credits):
Introduction to Organic Chemistry– December 26, 2012, by William H. Brown, Thomas Poon (Authors)

Laboratory of Organic Chemistry Module (3 credits):
Lecture notes and material provided by the teacher.
