Organic Chemistry Module (6 credits). The aim of this module is to provide the basic knowledge to understand rationalise and predict shapes, structures and reactivity of organic molecules. Laboratory of Organic Chemistry Module (3 credits). The laboratory module aims to provide students with the practical knowledge of basic organic chemistry through experimental laboratory activities. Organic Chemistry Module (6 credits). 1) Chemical bonding. 2) Covalent bonding in organic chemistry. 3) Organic acids and bases. 4) Stereochemistry, structures and properties of alkanes, alkenes, and cycloalkanes. 5) Reaction mechanisms and intermediates. 6) Reactivity of alkanes, alkenes. 7) Alkyl halides. 8)Alcohols. 9) Ethers, thiols and oxiranes. 10) Amines. 11) Ketones and aldehydes. 12) Carboxylic acids and derivatives 13) Lipids. 14) Aromatic compounds. 15) Generation and reactivity of enols and enolates. Laboratory of Organic Chemistry Module (3 credits). In laboratory exercises will apply the basic methods for the isolation (crystallization and distillation), purification (chromatographic techniques), the analysis and transformation of organic compounds through the reactions of functional groups. We will also provide the knowledge relating to safety in the laboratory.
