Syllabus

Course Objectives

Understanding and assimilation of the fundamentals about the characterization of the most commonly used materials. Acquisition of basic operational skills for the evaluation of the physical an mechanical properties useful in different applications. The use of teaching materials in English offers the opportunity to acquire a basic international vocabulary.

Course Prerequisites

Basics of physics and chemistry.

Class lectures with applications (16 hours).

Contents

The framework of material science and technology. Structure of crystalline and amorphous materials. Correlation between internal structure and elastic-plastic behavior of materials. Correlation between internal structure and other material properties (thermal, electrical). Monocrystalline and polycrystalline materials. Elastic deformation and plastic deformation. Characteristic properties of metallic materials, polymeric materials, ceramics and their composites. Mechanical properties, stress-strain relations, deformation and hardening. Some fundamental external actions and the corresponding states of stress and strain induced in the elastic range. Brittle failure, fatigue failure, fracture opening, failure for plastic flow. Types of materials and applications. Mechanical testing for the characterization of materials.
