Course Objectives

The course aims to increase students' awareness of society, the economy, and communication by using the tools provided by sociology and economic sociology—concepts, definitions, theories, empirical evidence—and by leveraging their existing knowledge, skills, and experience. The course is divided into two parts. The first part has three goals: defining communication as a human activity, illustrating the possible relationships between communication and the world of the economy and labor, illustrating the relationship between social differences and inequalities and communication. The second part has two objectives: defining sociology and illustrating how social research is carried out. At the end of the lessons, students must demonstrate their understanding of communication, the ability to identify the role that communication and the media play in society and the economy, and the ability to identify and discuss the main inequalities that characterize contemporary societies. Furthermore, they will have to demonstrate an understanding of the essential contributions that sociology makes to understanding the contemporary world, both in terms of analytical categories—particularly culture, structure, power, change, role, group, and organization—and in terms of social research methods and techniques.

Course Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required to attend the course, however the knowledge of basic notions of sociology, economics, history, law and mathematics acquired in upper secondary schools will favor a fruitful and active participation of students in the lessons.

Teaching Methods

The instructor believes that student learning is achieved not only through the content of the lectures but also through two-way communication between instructor and students, and through the appreciation of their knowledge, skills, and experiences in various spheres of social life. Therefore, active student participation through questions, answers, comments, and their contributions to the lectures will be encouraged. The lectures combine references to examples from everyday life, history, and social research with the exposition of concepts, models, and theories from sociology and other social sciences. In the final lectures, in addition to reviewing the course and drawing some conclusions, students will evaluate the content and teaching methods of the course and receive guidance on exam preparation. Students will have access to various tools to prepare for the exam: a textbook, a handout curated by the instructor, and various teaching aids such as slides, worksheets, podcasts, etc. Handouts, study materials, readings, and bibliographical references will be made available on the KIRO course page. The KIRO e-learning platform and its use will be presented in one of the first lessons, in collaboration with the University's Teaching Innovation and Digital Communication Service staff (https://idcd.unipv.it/). The combination of various learning activities, lectures, readings, and discussions is designed to achieve the course's learning objectives and allows for effective exam preparation, even if undertaken independently. Students who certify that they are student workers or meet one of the other seven conditions established by the University's inclusive teaching regulations will be guaranteed one hour of online office hours per week.

Assessment Methods

Student learning is assessed through a written exam. The exam consists of two parts: a multiple-choice test and a short written essay answering a question chosen from those proposed by the instructor. It lasts one hour. Students receiving compensatory measures are granted additional time to respond. The final grade, expressed out of thirtieths, is calculated based on the scores of the two parts, which are given equal weight.
