To provide deep knowledge of the methods for evaluating mucoadhesion, permeability and biocompatibility of drugs and formulations and the various cell models (intestinal, ophthalmic, buccal, vaginal, respiratory airways, skin, BBB).
Course Prerequisites
Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, histology, biopharmaceutics to understand the cells based models and their impact in the drugs testing.
Teaching Methods
Lecture; team work on selected relevant papers, visit to Laboratory of Biopharmaceutics and formulation Development.
Assessment Methods
Oral exam.
Texts
Notes provided by the professor.
Contents
Evaluation of mucoadhesive properties of polymers. Mucoadhesion test of liquid, semisolid and solid formulations and micro and nano systems. In vitro test (cell lines) to evaluate biocompatibility (test with Neutral Red, test with MTT, test of LDH) of active ingredients, excipients and formulations. In vitro (cell lines) and reconstructs (skin and cornea) to evaluate the absorption of active ingredients and formulations (permeability tests). Mechanisms of absorption of nanoparticulate systems. Methods to evaluate the cellular uptake and the intracellular trafficking of nanosystems. Methods to evaluate mucoadhesion properties (conventional dosage forms and nanoparticulate systems).
