This course provides theoretical and practical tools for designing and conducting chemistry activities for both middle and high schools, as well as science and environmental communication. Through laboratory work and pedagogical reflection, students will develop skills in translating complex chemical concepts into accessible learning experiences and interdisciplinary approaches for outreach and education
Course Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of general and organic chemistry acquired during the Bachelor's degree
Teaching Methods
Lectures supported by presentations (PowerPoint, made available after the class) and hands-on laboratory exercises
Assessment Methods
The final assessment consists of the evaluation of the laboratory notebook (to be submitted five days before the official exam session) and a 20-minute lesson prepared by the student on topics provided by the teachers, followed by a discussion.
Texts
Lecture notes and materials provided by the teacher
Contents
Module A (Inorganic Chemistry): Innovative teaching methodologies for chemistry instruction and outreach, through laboratory experiences covering various disciplinary areas of chemistry (analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry). Topics include chemical equilibria, reaction kinetics, qualitative and quantitative analyses, biomaterial synthesis, and environmental sustainability. Some activities also involve the use of spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel). Module B (Organic Chemistry): Teaching techniques for organic chemistry, including instruction and outreach using digital tools. Topics include teaching organic structures through a practical approach, teaching the nomenclature of organic compounds, and teaching functional groups using chemical software. Laboratory activities cover common techniques for purifying organic compounds (distillations, extractions, precipitations, and recrystallizations) as well as basic techniques for selected reactions.
