Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 12/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims are:
- to provide knowledge and understanding for proper planning and conduct researches in the Public Health
- to develop the ability to correctly apply the methodological principles and tools for risk assessment and the evaluation of health phenomena.
At the end of the course the student will be able to draw up an observational research protocol and identify the key steps to independently conduct a study in the area of Public Health, natural frame of Prevention. Moreover, the student will be able:
- to use a correct scientific language to communicate, integrating the skills deriving from the Communication Methodology course
- to change own actions or to identify the correct approach according to the proposed situations, integrating the knowledge deriving from the General Psychology course.

Course Prerequisites

The course is part of the basic training of students together with Epidemiology, Medical Statistics, Prevention Principles and Health Surveillance.
To follow the teaching activities, the student must have acquired the knowledge in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics or at least attended these courses.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity includes theoretical lectures and simulation applied to questions research related to the activity carried out in the field of Prevention and to published case studies to help the student acquire the skills necessary to plan new studies and develop a critical sense. Cooperative learning and role playing will also be used as additional teaching methods.

Assessment Methods

For students who have attended at least 75% of the lessons, the examination will be oral and will involve a project work assigned to groups (cooperation learning) at the end of the lessons. If a student prefers to work alone, she/he must inform the professor. The student will have to show that she/he has acquired both the adequate theoretical knowledge underlying the planning of a research protocol and the ability to write (knowledge and skills) and / or critically evaluate (competence) the research protocol assigned as project work (problem solving approach).
For students who have not taken 75% of the lesson hours, the examination will always be oral and will cover the whole course programme.
In both examinations, the assessment will take into account the ability to communicate and the use of an appropriate scientific language.
The finale grade is in 30th.

Texts

Any book on Epidemiologic research methodology may be used.
A useful textbook: Nancy A Dreyer, Parivash Nourjah, Scott R Smith, and Marion M Torchia. Developing a Protocol for Observational Comparative Effectiveness Research: A User's Guide". Editors: Priscilla Velentgas, 2013 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK126190/)

The material needed for the study is uploaded to the Kiro platform.
Extracts of the material presented in class, scientific articles and guidelines for the drafting of research protocols are provided.

Contents

Starting points: the rationale behind epidemiological studies in the Prevention field. Introduction to experimental epidemiological studies. How to ensure the validity of a study: - definition of bias - role of bias - bias control. The protocol of observational and experimental research: which are the essential points and how to lay it out. Overview of the regulations on the Ethical Boards.

Course Language
