At the end of the course, the student will know the role of the first responder, the main life-saving manoeuvres and will know how to use a semi-automatic defibrillator (AED). They will know how to investigate the main signs and symptoms in the case of a person suffering from a medical condition or traumatic event. He/she will know how to contact and communicate to the NUE the main data related to the event he/she is attending and will know the organisation of the Lombardy Region Emergency Medical System. He/she will know how to assess the environment in which he/she finds him/herself and will have the tools to make decisions in order to safeguard his/her own safety and that of the injured person.

No prerequisites are required.
Teaching Methods
The course is organised in theoretical and practical lessons. The theoretical lectures will be held in plenary with the support of power point devices. During the theoretical lessons there will be sections devoted to in-depth studies and clinical case studies. The practical lessons concerning life-saving manoeuvres and the use of the semi-automatic defibrillator (AED) will be carried out in small groups (maximum six people) through simulations on a dummy if the epidemiological situation from COVID-19 allows it.
Assessment Methods
One-hour multiple-choice written test during the scheduled examination sessions. During this written test, the student's knowledge of life-saving manoeuvres, the activation and organisation of the Emergency Medical System, first-aid techniques, the recognition of signs and symptoms useful to the lay first-aider (bystander), the main legislative provisions on the subject of first aid and, in general, all the syllabus covered during the theoretical lessons will be tested. The candidate will have to demonstrate that he/she is able to link the theoretical notions acquired during the theoretical lessons and the practical skills learnt in the manikin training lessons.

The professor will provide the slides and handouts on the Kiro portal for the student to study on in preparation for passing the written exam.

Outline what is meant by first aid and first aider (bystander), his role, the regulatory references to which he is subject and the tools available in the first aid kit/medication pack in the workplace. Organisation of the Urgent Emergency Health System (focus on the Lombardy situation), how to alert 112, life-saving manoeuvres. First-aider behaviour scheme, signs and symptoms to pay attention to in the main cases, analysis of clinical cases and first-aider behaviour.
