The course aims to provide students with the basic notions of Pharmacology, the mechanism of action of drugs in general and, more specifically, their therapeutic and toxic effects, with particular attention to drugs that act on the central nervous system and on muscle spasticity.
Course Prerequisites
Knowledge of the basics of human anatomy and physiology is useful for understanding pharmacology.
Teaching Methods
Teaching is conducted through lectures, with PowerPoint presentations.
Assessment Methods
The course exam consists of an oral exam on the topics listed in the syllabus and presented in class, aimed at assessing the level of achievement of the learning objectives. The assessment will take into account communication skills and the use of appropriate technical and scientific language.
Texts
Slides of the lessons and notes taken during classes are enough to obtain the required knowledge. As a reference, the student can deepen the topics on the following texts: M. Furlanut FARMACOLOGIA GENERALE E CLINICA per lauree triennali, Ed. Piccin, latest edition.
Contents
Introduction to pharmacology. Concept of drug and medicinal product. Basic knowledge about pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, routes of drug administration and mechanisms of drug action. Basic knowledge about general toxicity: side-effects, overdose, idiosyncratic and allergic reactions; teratogenesis and foetal toxicity; carcinogenesis; drug dependency. Basic knowledge about: Sedative, hypnotic and anxiolytic drugs; Antidepressant drugs; Antipsychotic drugs; Mood stabilizer drugs; drugs used for the treatment of ADHD; drugs used in the treatment of spasticity.
