Course Objectives

The Integrated Course in “CLINICAL MEDICINE AND SURGERY” includes the official teachings of Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pharmacology, Diagnostic Imaging, and Radioprotection. ### Educational Objectives of the Integrated Course The course aims to provide students with the necessary elements to: - Understand the pathophysiological mechanisms and fundamental diagnostic elements of major human diseases - Understand the responsibilities of the nurse regarding the execution of medical, surgical, laboratory, and imaging procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic - Acquire basic knowledge about the pharmacological and toxicological properties, and the use of pharmacologically active substances for therapeutic, preventive, and diagnostic purposes - Understand the nurse's responsibilities in identifying and solving issues related to pharmacological therapy, as well as in drug preparation and administration ### Internal Medicine Instruction Aims to provide students with essential knowledge to: - Identify the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying different diseases - Understand the clinical and diagnostic approach to patients - Recognize the clinical manifestations and biochemical expressions of major internal medicine conditions - Detect signs and symptoms of major internal medicine pathologies - Understand the nurse’s responsibilities in performing diagnostic and therapeutic medical procedures ### General Surgery Instruction Aims to provide students with essential knowledge to: - Identify the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying various diseases - Understand the clinical and diagnostic approach to patients - Recognize the clinical manifestations and biochemical expressions of major surgical pathologies - Detect signs and symptoms of major surgical conditions - Understand the nurse’s responsibilities in performing diagnostic and therapeutic surgical procedures ### Pharmacology Instruction Aims to provide students with the tools to: - Use correct terminology and symbols in relation to drugs and their application - Understand the fundamental principles behind drug action and interactions with biological systems - Acquire knowledge of the nurse's responsibilities in drug preparation and administration - Acquire skills for identifying and solving problems related to pharmacological therapy - Understand issues of toxicological relevance and the nurse’s role in addressing them - Learn essential notions regarding properties and usage of drugs for diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic purposes ### Diagnostic Imaging and Radioprotection Instruction Aims to provide students with the tools to: - Understand the fundamental physical principles behind ionizing radiation and its interaction with biological systems - Use appropriate terminology and symbols related to radiological investigations, therapies using ionizing radiation, and their applications - Use terminology and symbols appropriately in relation to imaging techniques not based on X-rays, such as ultrasound and MRI - Learn the essential principles of using ionizing radiation in diagnostics and therapy - Acquire knowledge of radioprotection - Understand the nurse’s responsibilities in preparing patients for radiological investigations or radiotherapy
