Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course focuses on analyzing the care aspects related to individuals affected by the most significant oncological issues, aiming to provide students with an in-depth and practical understanding of nursing principles in oncology. By the end of the course, students will have acquired the clinical, educational, and care-related knowledge necessary for managing individuals with oncological conditions, utilizing interventions supported by scientific evidence and proven efficacy.
The development of clinical, communication, and management skills will enable students to work effectively and sensitively in the oncology field, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment and support of patients and their families.
Through a theoretical pathway, the course aims to:
• Deepen knowledge of oncology fundamentals and the nurse's role in care pathways.
• Enhance the ability to manage oncological therapies and their complications.
• Promote empathic and effective communication during the clinical pathway.

• Integrate nursing assessment into a comprehensive approach that includes nutritional, psychological, and palliative aspects.
Provide the theoretical aspects and methods for an effective approach to symptom management.

Course Prerequisites

The course is part of the " Integrated course of specialized clinical medical nursing", frequented by nursing students together with the following modules: Clinical Cardiology nursing; Oncology; Cardiovascular diseases.
The better the student follows the course, the more likely they are to have attended the preparatory courses in Nursing Clinic, Medical Surgery, and Clinical Medical Surgery.

The organization of the course content will follow these priorities:
• Introduction to Oncology – Tumor Epidemiology
Overview of major oncological diseases, their incidence, and risk factors. A focus will be placed on the importance of prevention and screening programs.


• Key Players in Oncology: From PDTA to Multidisciplinary Teams
Analysis of the role of PDTA (Diagnostic and Therapeutic Pathways) and the collaboration among professionals within multidisciplinary teams, which are essential for ensuring an integrated approach to patient care.

• Empowerment and Engagement Concepts in Oncology – Actively Involving the Patient
Emphasis on actively engaging patients in their care journey, promoting informed participation in therapeutic decisions. Education aimed at equipping patients with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage their health autonomously and responsibly will be emphasized, promoting adherence to treatments, improving quality of life, and fostering a collaborative relationship between the patient and the healthcare team.



• Nursing Physical Assessment
Focus on clinical assessment techniques for oncological patients, with particular attention to signs and symptoms related to treatments and disease progression.


• Diagnostic Tests in Oncology: Methods and Applications for Cancer Detection
Discussion of key diagnostic methods, including imaging and biopsies, with a focus on nursing implications for patient preparation and support throughout the diagnostic process.



• Management of Chemotherapy Drugs: Administration and Treatment Toxicity
Exploration of chemotherapy administration methods, with an emphasis on safety protocols, management of side effects, and prevention of treatment toxicity.


• Blood Groups, ABO Compatibility Systems, and Blood Component Transfusion
Examination of ABO compatibility systems and blood component transfusion techniques, focusing on managing adverse reactions.

• Management of Infusion Lines (CVC, PICC, PORT-A-CATH, MIDLINE, CVP): From Administration to Complication Prevention
In-depth study of devices such as CVC, PICC, PORT-A-CATH, MIDLINE, and CVP. Topics include both the practical aspects of administering treatments and the prevention and management of complications such as infections and thrombosis.



• Nursing Management of Chemotherapy Extravasation
Early recognition and interventions to minimize tissue damage caused by chemotherapy extravasation.

• Simultaneous Care: Early Palliative Care
Introduction to the concept of simultaneous care, integrating palliative care into the early stages of oncology treatment. The module will cover nursing interventions designed to enhance the patient's quality of life.


• Effective Communication in Oncology: Delivering Bad News with Sensitivity and Competence – Addressing Fragile Settings
Examination of communication techniques for handling delicate situations, such as breaking bad news. This module includes strategies for interacting with sensitivity and competence in fragile settings and with vulnerable patients.


• Nutritional Screening in Oncology: The Central Role of Nursing Assessment in a Multidisciplinary Approach
Nutritional assessment is a key component of oncology nursing care. The module will explore screening methods and the role of nurses in supporting patients with complex nutritional issues.





• Gender-specific oncology: understanding how biological (sex) and sociocultural (gender) differences influence the incidence, symptoms, diagnosis, response to treatment, and prognosis of cancer. This course enables nurses to understand the role of personal, cultural, and social factors in disease diagnosis and prognosis, as well as in response to treatment, and how to promote training and special attention in this area, including within the context of research.


• Symptom science in oncology nursing: reasons for discussing the science of symptom management in oncology, the shifting pharmacological landscape in relation to the emergence of specific alterations (such as gastrointestinal alterations, fingerprints' alterations, or dermatoglyphic), distinction between symptoms and alterations, the theoretical model of symptom management (Symptom Management Theory), the multidimensional nature of symptoms, the distinction between unidimensional and multidimensional scales for symptom assessment, the distinction between clinician-reported scales and patient reported outcome scales (PROs) and patient reported outcome measures scales(PROMS), symptom clusters, leading professional associations in cancer care (i.e., AIIAO, ONS, and EONS).




• The nurse-patient relationship as communication in oncology: the axioms of communication, nonverbal and paraverbal communication, why it is important to communicate well in oncology and what the outcomes are, communication as a primary need, meeting patient educational needs, guidelines and evidence on communication in oncology.
• Management of the main side effects of oncology therapies (chemotherapy and targeted therapies): main categories of drugs used in oncology and main alterations/toxicities, sources of evidence for finding guidelines for the management of side effects, management of some of the alterations, including oral mucositis, hand-foot syndrome, fatigue and peripheral neuropathy, discussion of the difficulties in undertaking effective management of alterations and how to undertake a practical nursing approach.
